LEARNING ALPHABET IN AN ENGROSSING WAY

When I thinkofthe ABCs, twothingscometomind: theJacksonFiveSong “ABC” (easyas one-two-three) andvarious Sesame Street scenes oflettersfoundaroundNewYork. The alphabet is thefoundationaltoolforteachingphonemicawarenessand pre-readingskills. However, maybeit’smorethanthat. PerhapstheABCsareanintegralpartofourculturalidentity. Wesingthealphabet, categorizebyalphabetizing, andwespellusingthealphabet.

TheABCs, orthesoundsofthealphabet, transmitallofourthoughtsandfeelings. PerhapsI’mphilosophizingtoodeeplyastothefundamentallinkbetweenlanguageandculture. Regardless, theABCsarefundamentaltohowwecommunicateaseffectivewritersandreaders. Here, I intendtoprovide a fewfunandinterdisciplinaryideasthatwillgetthoselittlelearnerssingingtheirABCsin a varietyofdifferentways.

AlphabetWiggleGames

Asmanyofusknow, kidslovetomove, andmovementisessentialforkinestheticlearners. Youcanmakelearningthealphabet a movingexperiencebyintegratingdanceandrhythm.

  • ABC bodyshapesis a fungame. Youplayitbyholdingup a lettercardandcallingouttheletter’snameorthesounditmakes. Learnerswillthentwistandturn,attemptingtomaketheshapeofthatletterwiththeirbodies. Clappinggamesarealso a greatwaytoteachthealphabet.
  • Haveyourkidsclapalongasyousay a wordand a soundthatrelatetoeachletter. Forexample: A is forapple (clap, clap, clap) and A saysaaaaa! B is forbaby (clap, clap, clap) and B saysbbbb! Youcanalsopreparelearnersforchunkinglateronbyclappingoutthesyllablesorsoundchunksforeachwordyoucomeupwith. 
  • I liketohavemyKindergartnerswigglewhentheymakethelettersound. Youcanworkas a classtobrainstormmovements (verbs) thatstartwitheachletterofthealphabet. It'lltakesomecreativity, butit’s a greatwaytobuild a strong vocabulary and creative-thinking skills. NothingismorefunthanNoodle Arm N!
  • DoyourememberthegameWhoStole a Cookie? Havetheclasssitin a circle, thenhaveeachchildrandomlypick a lettercardfrom a bag, makingsurenottoshowittohisneighbors. Youstartsinging, “Whostole a letterfromtheletterjar?” “Someonestole a letterfromtheletterjar, andtheletter is C!” Whenyousaytheletterallthechildrenwith C cardsstandupandshowtheircard, theneachchildmustthinkof a wordthatstartswiththeletterbeforehecansitbackdown.

 

AlphabetArtProjects

  • Youknowthosewonderful large-sizedalphabetcardsthatyoucanpurchaseateducationstoresandhanginyourclassroom? Whynothaveyourlearnersmaketheminstead? Dependingonyourclasssize (learnerscanworkinpairsifnecessary) have a pairoranindividualdrawtheletteryouassign. Yourclasswillhave one-of-a-kind decor, andthekidswillhave a senseofclassownershipandpride.
  • Whenworkingwithpreschoolersorkindergartners, multi-sensoryactivitiesare a must.  Children canbuildletterrecognitionbycreating ABC caterpillars, snakes, ortrains. Havethemwatercolorcutoutsofeachletter. Next, theyarrangethelettersinorderandgluethemontocircles, squares, ordiamondshapes. Theyareconnectedtogether, withanappropriateheadandtailattached. Afteryour ABC animalortrainisputtogether, havetheclasstraceeachlettertoreinforceletterwritingskills. Thesearegreattohaveonbulletinboards.
  • A classictactileexerciseforlittlelearnersistohavethemwriteeachletterwiththeirfingersinshavingcream, fingerpaint, orcoloredvanillapuddingon atable. Theycanalsoshapelettersusingsaltdoughorclay.Thesecanbedried,painted, anddisplayed.  My favoritecreativeletteractivityhasalwaysbeenthe letter-of-the-day book. Eachchildmakeshisown alphabet song. Havetheclasswritetheletteroftheday, a wordthatbeginswiththatletter, and a correspondingimage. Thesepagesarethencompiledinto a booktotakehomeoryoucanusetheminclassthroughouttheyear.

 

AlphabetLetterDiscriminationActivities

Some letter-recognition activitiesarejust fun!Youcanmaketheseintocentersorprovidethemasenrichmentactivitiesat free-time.

  • Have a newspaperorprintadsoutat a table. Providelearnerswith a listofletterstheyaretofind. Theywillhuntthroughtheprintedmaterialanduse a pentocircletheletterstheyfindbasedontheirlist.
  • Lettermagnetsarealwaysfuntohaveavailable. Haveseveralpictureslike a cat, dog, bag, andapplewiththewordprintedunderimage. Learnersmanipulatethemagnetstomakethewordstheysee. Thisis a goodwaytobuildletterrecognitionand sight-wordvocabulary. 

Lettercollagesarequitefun. Provide a widevarietyofimagesprintedfromthecomputerorcutoutofmagazines, alongwithlarge cut-outletters. Thechildrencanchoose a letterandthenfindimageswhosenamebeginswiththechosenletter. Forexample: Theletter A can bedecoratedwithimagesofapples, ants, arachnids, artichokes, andambulances.
